Soil Preparation

Soil preparation is an essential part of your gardening journey. Making sure that your soil is prepared in the right way will help set up your plants for success! Here are some tips from us, alongside some products you can use that we sell in-store.

1. BRAND NEW BED

If you have an empty garden bed that needs filling, easy! Fill it up with some good quality potting mix and start planting. Just make sure to use a soil corresponding to your plants needs.

Most plants - Good Earth Premium Potting Mix (30L) is the way to go. It features organic compost, slow-release fertiliser, fish emulsion for strength, and a wetting agent to maintain moisture in Perth's climate.

Vegetable patches - Green Life Vegetable Mix (30L) has the perfect blend of nutrients to help your veges go gangbusters.

Natives - Good Earth Australian Native Mix (30L) is great. Low phosphorus, good drainage, everything you could ever need.

Acid Lovers - Good Earth Camellia/Azalea Potting Mix (30L). This potting mix is slightly more acidic. Also suitable for other acid loving plants like roses, gardenias, etc.

2. EXISTING BED

Perth is renowned for its sandy, nutrient poor, water repellant soil that dries out quickly. Here are some ways to fix that.

Soil Solver Clay Plus - We cannot recommend this highly enough. It permanently transforms sand into fertile loamy soil. Apply it alongside equal parts compost/organic matter (Manure or Peat Plus). Clay Plus is a fantastic product that stops you from having to remove a heap of soil from your bed, meaning a lot less work for you. Why chuck out bad soil when you can transform it instead!

Grow Safe Spreadable Microbes - Have you got a spot in the garden where things are struggling to grow, even after you have treated it? Has it been compromised by builders sand or something else? This product is great at restoring and revitalising poor soil.

3. UPKEEP / REGULAR MAINTENANCE

You will love your garden and it will love you back... if you give it regular care and attention.

Troforte Fertiliser - Feed it some slow release granular every 3 months.

GoGo Juice / Seasol - Just like humans, plants love some food to give them a boost.

Mulches - Chunky Pine Bark, Moisture Mulch, Lupin, Triple C - Gives it nutrients, suppresses weeds, aesthetically pleasing, retains water.

Soil Solver Compost Plus Minerals - Great for topping up pots. We use it on our citruses and we notice a huge boost of new growth every time.
